JOHN

I am an ambitious problem solver dedicated to making the world a place for all to thrive.  With an approach that is both human-centered and data driven I strive to create multi-sensory experiences where we live, work and play that illicit emotional and visceral reactions.....places people want to be a part of and that bring us together.  Primarily working in the realms of landscape architecture, urbanism, ecology and architecture, my projects often blur traditional boundaries.

Throughout my professional experience I have sculpted projects and led teams of all scales and scopes, crafting a body of work that fulfill my clients’ aspirations, while producing positive environmental change. With clients across the globe including prominent corporations, public agencies and figures in culture I have an expansive portfolio of projects that span the entire spectrum of design, including urban mixed-use complexes,  public transportation planning, museums, communities, parks, luxury resorts, vineyards, themed attractions and private estates.

Educated in architecture, landscape architecture, project management, horticulture and art, my thirst for knowledge and unique experiences is a lifelong adventure. I often travel to many of the world’s great cultural centers and natural landscapes for inspiration.

The international financial meltdown hit hard in the design and development industries. There were waves of layoffs, so I headed to Asia where they were hungry for Western design talent and guidance. I conceptualized projects, directed design teams, and led presentations for lifestyle communities, resorts, hospitality, commercial and mixed-use projects across China and SE Asia.

When the US economy began to rebound I returned stateside eager to prove myself professionally. There weren’t many opportunities, yet, so I began with executive estates for international figures. I also took initiative to coordinate staff, develop office culture and manage internal and integrated design, while helping to define and refine daily operational processes.

Hiatus     Landscape Designer     Architect

After graduating with distinction and awards atop my university class I learned how to develop significant cultural and commercial architecture projects across the world. As time passed I found myself more interested in the spaces between and around buildings, and the larger ecological implications of design and development, so I switched to Landscape Architecture. Noteworthy projects during this period included office towers, commercial, iconic museums, amusement parks, and private estates for discerning clients.

Beginning in 2000 I took a hiatus from the standard office routine. I spent several years focused on assisting my former wife with her career, traveling the world researching for her books and heading out on adventures. I periodically worked with Landscape Architects and accepted projects of my own to maintain professional momentum during frequent relocations. Typical landscape architecture efforts included:

• Create landscape designs for residences and
   cultural facilities

• Source vendors and negotiate contracts for

   materials selection
• Coordinate with surveyors, site engineers, and

   architects
• Supervise construction crews

• Cost estimate various scale landscape projects
• Contracts and Permitting
• Conduct onsite investigations of existing site

   conditions
• Produce pricing, permitting and construction
   drawing packages
•  Monthly billings and projections
